History of Child Find
Child Find was originally founded in the United States in 1980 by Gloria Yerkovich of New York.
Calgary resident Kathy Morgenstern took it upon herself to form a similar Canadian organization in 1983, after discovering Canada did not have an organization that dealt specifically with missing children. She was prompted by the disappearance of 6 year old Tania Murrell on her way home from school in Edmonton. Tania has yet to be found.
Subsequent to the fall of 1983, Child Find organizations began to be established in provinces other than Alberta. The need to keep in contact and coordinate efforts was given high priority. The first national meeting occurred in Calgary in February 1985 and efforts immediately began to standardize services, plan for expansion to all provinces, handle an 800 toll free line, and jointly release photos of missing children for posters and the media.
Child Find PEI was incorporated on July 8, 1988, a few months after a group of interested citizens met around a kitchen table to discuss the formation of such an organization. After researching and discussing missing children's issues in other provinces, it was decided that there is a need for Child Find in Prince Edward Island.
We do have children missing from our Island. We need to help prevent this tragedy through our education and awareness programs. There is a need to protect our children, to make them safe and know what to do in unfavourable circumstances.
