July - August 2004 Newsletter

Message from the Executive Director

Summer is finally here and our children are enjoying the great outdoors. This would be a good time to talk to them about personal safety. Teach your child to avoid talking to strangers and to trust their feelings. Never leave your child alone at home unattended, and never leave your child in a vehicle, not even for a minute. Know where your child is, and let them know where you are, so they learn by example. Make this summer a safe and happy one for your child.

Many thanks to all our volunteers who have helped out at our school fingerprinting clinics. You have successfully fingerprinted 1,218 grade one students in 39 schools. Thank you all so very much. I look forward to working with you in the 2004-2005 school year.

About Child Find

Child Find was established in Alberta in 1983 and since then has spread across Canada to include 8 provincial organizations and 1 national organization. This gives us a presence in an estimated 59 communities across Canada being serviced by approximately 3500 volunteers and staff.

Child Find PEI is a registered non-profit charitable organization who works interprovincially with other Child Finds across Canada. Before we can become involved in any case, the case must be registered with the police first. We are not government funded and rely heavily on the generosity of the community. All services rendered in locating a missing child are provided at no cost to the family.

Child Find is the oldest, largest and most comprehensive missing children's organization in Canada. We are recognized by the National Missing Children's Services in Ottawa, as well as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Child Find works closely with Canada Customs and their program "Project Return". Since 1984 Child Find's programs have been endorsed by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, and more recently by the RCMP and municipal police forces.

Child Find offers a variety of community awareness and public education programs related to child safety. Through heightened awareness and education, Child Find strives to assist parents in avoiding situations that put children at risk of abduction. These program activities include: "All About Me ID" (fingerprinting clinics), educational videos such as "Too Smart for Strangers" & "How to Raise a Street Smart Child", distribution of brochures and pamphlets, public displays at community events, and distribution of missing children posters. Our services are rendered at no cost, with funds generated back into our programs to serve our communities.
