May - June 2004 Newsletter
Message from the Executive Director
May 25th is Missing Children's Day. We ask that everyone wear a green ribbon throughout the month of May to remember the children who are missing. Furthermore, that people leave their porch light on the night of May 25th to help light their way home. Green ribbon boxes will be on display at various businesses throughout the Island during the month of May.
Child Find PEI will be having an information booth and fingerprinting clinics at the Charlottetown Mall on May 8, 15, and 22 from 11am-5pm. If you are interested in volunteering at the booth, please call me at 368-1678.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish parents a very Happy Mother's Day and Father's Day.

May is Green Ribbon of Hope Month
Each year in Canada, police departments receive thousands of reports of missing children who are classified as runaways or the victims of parental or stranger abductions. In 1986, the Solicitor General of Canada declared May 25th to be Missing Children's Day in Canada. The Green Ribbon of Hope Campaign, which runs for the entire month of May, is designed to draw public awareness to the issue of missing children in Canada.
During May, community members are asked to show their support and concern of the issue by prominently wearing a green ribbon. The concept was originated by the students and faculty of Holy Cross Secondary School in St. Catharines, Ontario following the abduction and subsequent murder of their friend, Kristen French. As a legacy from Kristen, the students and faculty generously directed that their idea for the green ribbon be used exclusively as a symbol of hope by Child Find Canada.
Proceeds generated by the campaign enable Child Find Canada and its provincial members to continue their mandate to reduce the incidence of missing children/youth through education, prevention and location programs.
Green is the colour of Hope. It symbolizes our light in the darkness and is a symbol of hope for the safe return of all missing children.

All the Time in the World
While at the park one day, a woman sat down next to a man on a bench near a playground.
"That's my son over there," she said, pointing to a little boy in a red sweater who was gliding down the slide.
"He's a fine looking boy," the man said. "That's my son on the swing in the blue sweater." Then, looking at his watch, he called to his son. "What do you say we go, Todd?"
Todd pleaded, "Just five more minutes, Dad. Please? Just five more minutes." The man nodded and Todd continued to swing to his heart's content.
Minutes passed and the father stood and called again to his son. "Time to go now?"Again Todd pleaded, "Five more minutes." The man smiled and said, "Okay."
"My, you certainly are a patient father," the woman responded.
The man smiled and then said, "My oldest son Tommy was killed by a drunk driver last year while he was riding his bike near here. I never spent much time with Tommy and now I'd give anything for just five more minutes with him. I've vowed not to make the same mistake with Todd. He thinks he has five more minutes to swing. The truth is, I get five more minutes to watch him play."
