Tips for Kids
Always tell your parents where you will be.
Travel in groups, or with a friend. There is safety in numbers.
Do not go into areas that are dark and vacant.
Do not take dares to go into poorly lit or dangerous places.
Do not accept job offers, rides or gifts from a stranger.
If you see someone hanging around school, tell an adult that you trust. Remember as much detail as possible - Are they driving a car? What did they look like? What were they wearing? Are they short or tall?
If a person you know asks you to go with him/her, do not go unless you first get permission from your parents. Let the person know that your parents know where you are.
It is not fun to run away from home. Nothing is so terrible that you can't tell someone you trust. Call a friend or Child Find 1-800-387-7962 for more help.
Do not answer the door if you are home alone, and don't tell anyone that you are home alone.
If someone keeps calling, phone the police.
If someone tries to enter your home, call the police immediately.
If people in cars ask directions, step back away from the car and tell the people that you do not know, then walk away quickly.
If someone touches you in a way that feels bad, say "NO" and tell an adult you trust. Nobody has the right to touch you in a way that feels bad. Remember, you did nothing wrong.
If you are scared or frightened, go to a safe house. Your parent(s) can tell you which houses are safe.
Do not go with strangers, or anyone you don't know very well. Check with your parent(s) first.
If someone tells you that your parents have asked him or her to pick you up or want you to go with them, do not go until they can give you the proper code word. If they say they know the code but have forgotten, do not go with them.
