Tips for Teenagers

  • Tell your parents right away if you come across any information that makes you uncomfortable.

  • Never agree to get together with someone on-line without checking with your parents first.

  • Do not accept job offers that require you to go to lonely areas or seem too good to be true.

  • If someone offers to take your picture to make you famous, think twice!

  • Travel in groups. Remember that there is always safety in numbers.

  • Do not baby-sit in a home for people you don't know.

  • Do not hitch-hike, you could be setting yourself up for trouble.

  • Do not accept offers of drinks, cigarettes and/or drugs.

  • Be aware of people 'hanging around' your school, home or hangout.

  • Remember to tell someone you trust, if anyone tries to touch or fondle you.

  • Listen to your feelings..that little voice inside. It is usually right. Learn to trust it.

  • Think twice before running away from home. If you run away, you will be at the mercy of others, which could be worse than where you are now. Speak to someone you trust or call Child Find at 1-800-387-7962 to help you solve your problem.

  • If you know of anyone who has run away, please tell them it is never too late to go home or call Child Find to arrange a safe place to go.

  • Sometimes parents are overprotective because they love you and want to protect you. Rules may need to be negotiated. They'll worry less if you keep them up to date on your life. Let them know where you are going and when you will be home.
